Teresa's Tips - Beginning Drop Spindle 101

So you want to make some yarn!
I've had so many questions lately from beginning spindlers that I thought this would be a good place to start this new section of the website.
Choosing your spindle:
Most people start on a spindle because they don't want to spend a lot of money on a hobby that they are not sure that they can do or that they will enjoy. That makes sense to some degree, but that should not be your only deciding factor.
Spindles are great for a number of reasons. They are low cost, very portable, simple, and beautiful in their simplicity. If mastered, they are also addicting.
Top Whorl or Bottom Whorl? The choice is partially preference and partially function. There are great beginner spindles in both styles.
Typically, bottom whorl spindles have nice balance and easy spin for a beginner. They are generally designed for spinning thicker yarn and since most beginners start out spinning thick anyway, it makes sense to go with a bottome whorl. The Lacis Bottom Whorl Spindle is my favorite and is priced at just $12 and comes with basic instructions.
Top Whorl Spindles seem to be what most people offer to beginners. A Top Whorl Spindle must be well balanced for a beginner or they will have difficulty controlling it. It will spin faster and the spinner will need to learn to control the spin and draft process. They are great for spinners who learn with the "spin and park" method of spinning. Top whorl spindles generally spin a finer yarn. I offer a Complete Learn to Spin Kit for $20.
One thing I always tell beginning spindlers. If you learn to spin on a spindle successfully, you will likely be a spinner for life. If you get frustrated and think you can't do it, borrow a wheel and give that a spin. It doesn't mean that you won't be a spinner, just not a spindler.
